Beauty
Japanese luxury skincare brand launched in December 1980 under the Max Factor Japan label, following a decade of research inspired by the observation that elderly sake brewery workers had remarkably youthful hands from daily contact with fermented yeast. Scientists isolated the key yeast strain and developed a proprietary ingredient called Pitera — a filtrate rich in vitamins, amino acids, and minerals. Procter & Gamble acquired the brand in 1991 as part of its $1.14 billion purchase of Max Factor from Revlon, and subsequently renamed it SK-II (standing for "Secret Key"). Under P&G, the brand expanded from Japan to China and Southeast Asia, then to the UK in 2000 and the US in 2004, becoming a global prestige skincare franchise manufactured exclusively in Shiga, Japan.
