Fashion
Irish value fashion retailer founded in June 1969 by Arthur Ryan and Micaela Mitchell in Dublin — originally under the name Penneys, a name it retains to this day in the Republic of Ireland. The store was established on behalf of the Weston family, who owned Associated British Foods, making it an ABF subsidiary from inception. Primark expanded into Great Britain in 1973, renaming itself Primark outside Ireland to avoid trademark conflict with US retailer JCPenney. The brand operates a distinctive physical-only retail model with no traditional e-commerce platform, relying on high-volume, large-format stores in prime urban locations. As of 2025 it operates approximately 450 stores in 17 countries, including a US presence opened in 2015, and generates approximately £9.4 billion in annual sales.
