Marine Layer is an independent company.

American casual lifestyle apparel brand founded in San Francisco, California in 2009 by Michael Natenshon and Adam Lynch, born from Natenshon's frustration after his girlfriend threw out his favourite worn-in T-shirt and his determination to create a shirt that felt broken-in and absurdly soft from the very first wear. Marine Layer built its identity around obsessively soft, custom-developed fabrics — including its signature MicroModal blend derived from beechwood — and an unpretentious, West Coast lifestyle aesthetic that spans tees, knits, outerwear, bottoms, and accessories for men and women. A defining sustainability initiative is Re-Spun, a take-back programme that collects customers' old T-shirts, shreds them, and respins them into new Marine Layer fabric, diverting over 650,000 pounds of clothing from landfills. The brand became B Corp certified in 2022. Marine Layer operates 50+ brick-and-mortar stores across the United States and distributes direct-to-consumer online. Los Angeles-based growth equity firm Provenance took a significant minority stake in September 2018 and joined the board to support national retail expansion.
