American department store chain founded in Kemmerer, Wyoming by James Cash Penney as a dry goods store called The Golden Rule. Penney expanded the business across the American West and Midwest during the early 20th century, growing into one of the largest retailers in the country. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic and was acquired by Simon Property Group and Brookfield Corporation, before merging with SPARC Group to form Catalyst Brands in January 2025.
