Swedish multinational clothing group founded in 1947, the world's second-largest fashion retailer after Inditex. Originally founded as Hennes (Swedish for "hers") in Västerås, Sweden, the company expanded into menswear in 1968 when founder Erling Persson acquired Mauritz Widforss, giving rise to the Hennes & Mauritz name. Publicly listed on Nasdaq Stockholm, the Persson family retains majority ownership and control through three generations. The group operates over 4,000 stores in 77 markets and employs over 100,000 people worldwide.
