Personal Care
American natural personal care brand founded in Maine in 1984 by beekeeper Burt Shavitz and entrepreneur Roxanne Quimby, beginning with handcrafted beeswax candles made from Shavitz's surplus beeswax sold at Maine craft fairs. Quimby expanded the product line into lip balms, soaps, and personal care products through the 1990s, building the brand around an "Earth-friendly, Natural Personal Care Company" positioning. Burt's Bees was headquartered in Durham, North Carolina before its acquisition and grew to several hundred million dollars in revenue as a pioneer of the natural beauty category. AEA Investors acquired a majority stake from Quimby in 2004. Clorox acquired Burt's Bees in 2007 for $925 million, one of the largest acquisitions of a natural personal care brand at the time.
