A professional hair care and beauty brand by Austrian-born hairstylist Horst Rechelbacher, whose mother was an herbalist and whose upbringing instilled a deep interest in plant-based remedies. Rechelbacher formulated the first product, a clove shampoo, in his kitchen sink after a transformative trip to India introduced him to the principles of Ayurveda.

Estée Lauder Companies acquired Aveda in 1997, its first entry into the professional hair care category. The brand operates through approximately 6,000 partner salons and 63 Aveda Institute cosmetology schools in the United States.
